About

This attractive, often multi-stemmed tree features a dense, rounded canopy of small, glossy dark green leaves and distinctive smooth, grey bark that darkens beautifully with age. It produces small, orange-red, edible berries that are sweet and enjoyed by both humans and wildlife, appearing in abundance.

Where it works in Kilifi

This versatile tree thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to various well-drained soils, including typical coastal sandy types. Excellent as a specimen tree for its attractive form, or planted in groups for shade, it also serves as a valuable component in wildlife-friendly garden and restoration projects.

Growing notes

It exhibits a moderate growth rate, establishing well and becoming largely drought-tolerant once mature. Requires minimal watering after establishment and is generally hardy, preferring the warm coastal climates of Kilifi.
