About
Diospyros natalensis is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub or small to medium-sized tree, typically reaching 6 to 10 metres in height, with a much-branched habit. Its small, glossy dark green leaves are oval and thinly leathery, complementing the smooth, pale grey bark that can sometimes become dark and lichen-spotted. The tree produces small white flowers, followed by distinctive yellowish to orange or red acorn-like fruits, each with a sharp tip and held in a persistent calyx cup.
Where it works in Kilifi
This shapely indigenous tree thrives in full sun to semi-shade and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for coastal Kilifi gardens. It can be planted as an ornamental specimen, used effectively as a clipped hedge for screening, or integrated into restoration plantings in coastal dune and forest margin areas.

Diospyros natalensis is a slow-growing species that is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal additional water during dry periods. It prefers well-drained soil and benefits from a small amount of fertiliser to support its growth. Propagation is typically from seed, sown in a fertile, well-drained mix after a period of soaking.
