About
Diospyros mespiliformis is a large, evergreen tree, typically reaching 15-25 metres, sometimes up to 50 metres, with a dense, rounded crown. Its bark is dark grey to black and characteristically rough with fissures. It produces small, fragrant, cream-coloured flowers, with male and female flowers borne on separate trees, followed by edible, globose, yellow to orange fruits with an enlarged calyx.
Where it works in Kilifi
This tree thrives in full sun and is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and heavy clay, preferring moist conditions. It is ideal for large gardens or landscapes, providing excellent shade and functioning as a windbreak. It is often found naturally along riverbanks or on termite mounds.
Growing notes
Diospyros mespiliformis exhibits a medium growth rate, though it is initially slow-growing, accelerating considerably after the first year. It prefers moist conditions and requires consistent, plentiful watering once established to maintain its growth. Young trees are sensitive and do not transplant easily, and its sawdust may cause dermatitis upon continuous contact.
