About
This perennial herb, often scrambling, features 6-angled stems that can reach up to 4m long. It produces axillary inflorescences of 1-3 umbels, each bearing 2-6 bright pink or purple flowers, 14-21.5 mm long. The ovate leaves are 2-12.5 cm long, and the fruit is a glandular pubescent capsule measuring 5.5-8.5 mm.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens, this plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It can be utilised as an ornamental, a scrambling groundcover, or in mixed borders, particularly in dry habitats or forest margins.
Growing notes
A hardy and relatively low-maintenance plant, it requires moderate watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, becoming drought-tolerant once established. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and size.
