About
This annual or short-lived perennial herb can reach up to 2 metres tall, often with many branches. It features ovate to slightly angular leaves, sometimes dark violet, and large, trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, yellow, lilac, or dark purple. These fragrant blossoms, which can be single or double, typically open in the evening and last until midday, giving way to spherical, spiny fruit. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden in full sun to partial shade, thriving in rich, moist, well-drained loams. It can serve as a striking specimen or background plant, adding a tropical feel, and should be spaced about 1 metre apart to accommodate its sprawling habit.
Growing notes
This is a fast-growing plant, typically reaching 90-120 cm in height and spread. It requires regular watering once established during the growing season, though ambient moisture suffices in cooler periods, and is not frost-tolerant. All parts are highly toxic, and ingestion can be fatal, while the sap may cause skin irritation.
