About
Dalbergia vacciniifolia is a climbing shrub or small tree, typically 1.3–10 metres tall, with bark that is greyish or brown and striate. Its leaves are 5–9 cm long, featuring 5–8 oblong-elliptic leaflets on each side that are noticeably whitish-hairy beneath. Fragrant white flowers are produced in lax panicles, developing into papery, oblong-elliptic fruits, 3–4.5 cm long, each containing one to two seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to East Tropical Africa and found in Kilifi District at low altitudes, Dalbergia vacciniifolia is ideal for coastal gardens or restoration in full sun. As a climbing shrub or liana, it can be grown as a specimen supported by a trellis or within mixed plantings.
Growing notes
Once established, this species is well-suited to seasonally dry conditions. Users should be aware that the wood of some Dalbergia species can contain sensitising quinones, potentially causing allergic reactions.
