About
Dactyladenia barteri is a versatile climbing shrub or small tree growing up to 12 metres tall, characterised by a dense, spreading crown and often a fluted, crooked bole. Its dark glossy green leaves turn reddish-brown with age, and it produces single-seeded green fruits that are thinly fleshy and sweet-smelling when ripe. This species is valued for soil stabilisation, erosion control, and agroforestry, providing durable, termite-resistant timber for poles and fuelwood.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for sunny locations in a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape, particularly for soil stabilisation, erosion control, or as part of an agroforestry system. It thrives in moist, lowland tropical conditions and tolerates leached, acidic, and infertile soils, making it suitable for restoration or as a shade/timber specimen. Space trees around 4m x 4m for optimal growth.
Growing notes
This species exhibits a medium to fast growth rate, with seedlings developing quite quickly. It requires consistent moisture, especially during establishment, but established trees are resilient to occasional flooding and fire. Young plants should be protected from browsing animals, and while it prefers moist soil, it is well-adapted to poor soil conditions.
