About
This evergreen perennial bulb produces lush green, strap-like leaves up to 400 mm long, forming clumps. It bears striking funnel-shaped, red to orange-red flowers with curled lobes on stems up to 300 mm long, typically blooming in late summer to autumn. The plant naturally occurs in eastern tropical Africa, including Kenya, often found near water courses, on rocky slopes, or in rock crevices.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden in light or partial shade, it performs well as a bedding plant, in pots, or hanging baskets. It thrives in well-drained, compost-enriched soil, with bulbs planted with their necks exposed.
Growing notes
This species has a moderate to fast growth rate and requires regular watering during summer, allowing the soil to dry between waterings once established. It is half-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to 0°C. Avoid disturbing the bulbs for several years as they resent relocation.
