About
A diverse genus, Cyphostemma species are typically perennial climbing plants or lianas, often succulent, supporting themselves with tendrils. Many species found in East Africa exhibit a scrambling habit, reaching several metres in length. They often produce fleshy leaves and inconspicuous flowers, followed by showy, sometimes edible, berries.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for the Kilifi coast, this indigenous climber thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-draining sandy or loamy soils. It is ideal for growing on trellises, fences, or other structures, and can be incorporated into restoration projects in bushland and thicket areas.
Growing notes
Generally slow-growing, these plants are highly drought tolerant once established, preferring moderate watering during the active growing season and dry conditions in cooler months to prevent rot.
