About
This perennial sedge forms dense tufts, growing up to 60 cm tall from short woody rhizomes or black bulbs. Its robust, triangular stems are typically 35–50 cm long. Linear, stiff basal leaves measure 20–40 cm long and 1–5 mm wide, with pale reddish-brown sheaths. The plant produces a capitate to compound inflorescence, 8–15 cm in diameter, bearing 12–22 lanceolate spikelets with golden to yellowish-brown glumes.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to coastal Kenya, this sedge thrives in seasonally damp habitats such as sandy coastal dunes, grasslands, and woodland edges. It prefers shallow sandy or loamy soils with low fertility, often overlying outcropping rocks, and can be planted in open, sunny areas with partial shade.
