An evergreen tree growing 4.5 to 18 metres tall, with a bushy crown and buttressed base on mature specimens, and smooth grey bark. It features compound leaves with typically 6-8 small, elliptic to obovate-elliptic leaflets. Small, sweetly scented white flowers appear in clusters, followed by woody, flat pods up to 6 cm long with a small beak. It is typically found in coastal dry evergreen and deciduous woodlands.
Where it works in Kilifi
This native coastal tree is excellent for providing shade or as a specimen in a Kilifi garden, thriving in both white and red sandy soils. It is also suitable for restoration projects in dry evergreen and deciduous woodlands, requiring ample space due to its mature size.
