About
This deciduous to evergreen tree can reach up to 30m tall, featuring smooth grey bark that develops fissures and an aromatic quality with age. Its dark green, egg-shaped leaves have two knob-like glands at the stalk junction and typically display five distinct veins from the base. Small, greenish-cream flowers are followed by conspicuous clusters of round, salmon-orange, three-lobed fruits that ripen from December to May.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens as a fast-growing shade or specimen tree, it tolerates both shade and full sun. Plant in well-draining loamy soil rich in organic matter, but avoid planting too close to buildings due to its weak root system.
Growing notes
This fast-growing tree can achieve approximately 1.5m of growth per year and thrives with regular watering to maintain evenly moist soil in humid conditions once established. Caution is advised as its fruits are poisonous if ingested, and the sap can cause skin irritation.
