The Kenya croton is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that typically reaches 15-35 metres, featuring a spreading, flat crown with distinctive layered branches. Its bark is dark grey and rough, while its oval-shaped leaves have a dull green upper surface and a pale, silvery underside. It produces short-lived, yellow-white flowers in hanging spikes and large, oil-rich fruits containing three seeds, making it valuable for timber, biofuel, and traditional medicine.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for sunny to partially shaded locations, this tree thrives in light, deep, well-drained, and moist soils, tolerating various soil types. In a Kilifi-coast garden, it serves as an excellent specimen or shade tree, and can be used for reforestation, live fences, or as a boundary marker. Space trees 5-8 metres apart to accommodate their extensive growth and deep taproot system.
Growing notes
Kenya croton is a fast-growing species, reaching maturity in five to seven years, and is notably drought-resistant once established. It requires minimal care, though supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells and using mulch to retain soil moisture are beneficial. It can become invasive under favourable conditions, and burning its wood may produce smoke that irritates the eyes.
