About
This shrub or small tree typically grows 2-5 metres tall, occasionally up to 7.5 metres, often forming a pyramidal crown. Its leathery, aromatic, oblong-elliptic leaves may appear silvery due to scales and often turn bright orange with age, while small, yellow flowers develop into spherical, three-parted fruits. It naturally thrives in dry forests, bushlands, and thickets, often on rocky or porous soils.
Where it works in Kilifi
This hardy species is well-suited for Kilifi Coast gardens, thriving in full, direct sun and well-draining, potentially rocky or porous soils. It can be used as a drought-tolerant specimen shrub or small tree in dryland landscaping.
Growing notes
This plant is drought-tolerant once established, preferring sparse watering with soil allowed to dry out almost completely between waterings. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
