About
This shrub or small tree, native to the seasonally dry tropics of Northeast Brazil, features leathery, oblong-elliptic leaves and small, yellow-green flowers. It is known for its adaptability to arid conditions, exhibiting leaf plasticity to manage water availability between wet and dry seasons. In its native range, it is valued as an ornamental and used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including inflammatory processes and gastrointestinal disorders.

Ideal for Kilifi Coast gardens, this plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires moist, well-drained, sandy loam soil. It serves as an excellent ornamental specimen or can be planted in groups to provide vibrant foliage and colour to the landscape.
Growing notes
This slow-growing shrub typically adds 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) of height annually, reaching up to 3 metres tall in ideal outdoor conditions. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between applications. The plant's sap is an irritant and toxic if ingested, so handle with care.
