About
This annual herb grows up to 1 metre tall, featuring yellow, tubular flowers with a distinctive long spur and grey-green leaves. Its small, round, black seeds are enclosed in pods that produce a rattling sound when mature. Native to tropical Africa, it is typically found in grasslands, open woodlands, and disturbed areas.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, this species is ideal for soil stabilisation and restoration projects in Kilifi-coast gardens. It also functions effectively as a green manure crop.
Growing notes
A fast-growing annual, it is best propagated by seed in early spring, requiring a warm, sunny location with consistent moisture until germination. Care should be taken as it can self-seed aggressively, and its seeds are toxic to livestock.
