About
This small, upright herb is characterised by its bright yellow, pea-like flowers which are followed by distinctive inflated seed pods. When mature, the seeds inside these pods become loose and rattle when shaken, giving the plant its common name.
Where it works in Kilifi
On the Kilifi coast, this plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for soil improvement in garden beds or agricultural plots. It can be effectively utilised in restoration areas as a pioneer species due to its nitrogen-fixing properties.
Growing notes
This fast-growing species requires minimal water once established and is generally robust and easy to cultivate. While often used beneficially, some rattlepod species contain alkaloids, so caution should be exercised regarding consumption by livestock or humans.
