Crotalaria kirkii is a species within the large genus Crotalaria, which comprises over 700 herbaceous plants and shrubs primarily found in Africa. Members of this genus are often characterised by their inflated, subcylindric pods containing seeds that rattle when mature, giving rise to common names like "rattlepod" or "rattlebox" for the genus as a whole. Many Crotalaria species are known for their ability to fix nitrogen and are utilised as green manure or for soil conservation.
