About
This bulbous perennial features broad, dark green, finely hairy, strap-shaped leaves that can grow over 1.5 metres long. It produces an inflorescence on a tall stalk, bearing numerous trumpet-shaped flowers, typically white with a prominent deep pink central stripe on each segment. The fruit is a vivid orange to deep red, globose, and lacks a beak, containing a thick, spongy pericarp.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for sunny borders or as a specimen plant in a Kilifi-coast garden, thriving in sandy soils. Plant bulbs with the neck exposed or just below the soil surface, ensuring adequate space as plants can grow quite large.
Growing notes
This plant exhibits a slow growth rate. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture, especially during flowering periods. Disturbing established bulbs is not recommended as it can delay blooming for several years.
