About
Indigenous Cordia trees in East Africa typically grow up to 15-30 metres tall, often developing a spreading, umbrella-shaped or rounded crown. They are characterised by large, frequently oval leaves, and produce showy, sweet-scented white flowers that attract bees. These trees yield yellow-orange, sticky, edible fruits.
Where it works in Kilifi
An indigenous Cordia species would be suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden, offering excellent shade and serving well as a specimen tree or for restoration efforts. It thrives in bright, direct sunlight and prefers well-draining soils, including sandy or loamy types, and can tolerate neutral to alkaline conditions often found in coastal areas.
Growing notes
Many indigenous Cordia species are reasonably fast-growing and, once established, can tolerate some drought, though they perform best with regular watering during the growing season. They are adaptable and typically respond well to practices such as lopping, pollarding, and coppicing.
