This small to medium-sized evergreen tree typically reaches 7-10 metres, featuring a broad, dense crown and smooth, ovate leaves. It is distinguished by its showy, bright orange, funnel-shaped flowers, produced year-round, and its spherical, woody fruits that are buoyant for sea dispersal. Its durable, easily worked wood is prized for carving, particularly for food vessels as it does not impart flavour.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi's coastal gardens, this tree thrives in full sun and well-draining sandy or loamy soils, tolerating salt spray and moderate winds. Plant as a specimen, for shade, or in coastal restoration, ensuring ample space for its wide crown.
Growing notes
It exhibits a moderately fast growth rate, especially in its early years. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during prolonged dry spells. Pruning is beneficial to maintain its attractive, rounded crown.
