About
Coptosperma nigrescens is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 1.5–7 metres tall, with shiny dark reddish to greyish, flaking bark and glabrous twigs. Its leathery, glossy green leaves are lanceolate to elliptic and often dry blackish, shrivelling during drought. It produces white or yellowish flowers with a pubescent throat, which develop into black, spherical, single-seeded fruits when ripe, approximately 6–8 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is suitable for coastal gardens in Kilifi, thriving in well-drained, sandy soils and capable of tolerating some shade, as well as dry conditions. It can be planted as a specimen shrub or integrated into restoration plantings within coastal woodland-forest mosaics.
Growing notes
Once established, this plant is tolerant of drought, though its leaves may shrivel under severe dry conditions. It can grow in shaded areas.
