About
This evergreen shrub or small tree typically grows 2-6 metres tall, occasionally reaching up to 14 metres. It features glossy, dark green leaves and produces fragrant, whitish to yellowish flowers. The fruit matures into a black, spherical drupe, measuring 3.5-6.5 mm in diameter.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full, direct sunlight and well-draining loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Its high tolerance for drought and salt spray makes it suitable for ornamental use, hedging, or restoration in coastal bushland and dry forest areas.
Growing notes
Adapted to seasonally dry tropical climates, it requires sparing watering once established, allowing the soil to dry between waterings, and benefits from moderate humidity. The plant undergoes a dormancy period during dry seasons.
