About
This evergreen tree typically grows 10-20 metres tall, sometimes reaching 30 metres, with fissured grey-brown bark and a bole up to 90 cm in diameter. Its smooth, shiny, lance-shaped leaves are 5-10 cm long, while small, fragrant yellow-green flowers are arranged in round heads. The tree produces dry, cone-like, greenish fruit heads and is valued for its dense foliage which provides shade and acts as a windbreak.
Where it works in Kilifi
This resilient tree is excellent for Kilifi's coastal gardens, thriving in full sun and tolerating sandy, saline, or coral soils. It serves well as a specimen for shade, a windbreak, or for hedges and screening, especially in hot, dry conditions.
Growing notes
A very fast-growing tree, it requires regular watering during its early stages but becomes highly drought-tolerant once established. Avoid planting near buildings due to its vigorous root system, which can impact infrastructure.
