About
Commiphora unilobata is a perennial shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 3 metres tall. It features a distinctive thick, green-grey trunk with yellowish, papery bark that peels off in layers, revealing succulent bark beneath. Its compound leaves consist of up to nine bright green leaflets, and it produces small, intense red flowers from fiery red buds. This species is known for producing aromatic resins, similar to myrrh, which can be used to make essential oils.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in direct sunlight and requires very well-draining, moderately fertile soil, making it suitable for xeriscaping in a Kilifi-coast garden. It can be planted as a distinctive specimen, adding unique texture to the landscape.
Growing notes
Once established, this plant is drought-tolerant and requires moderate watering every 3-4 days during its spring and summer growing season, with reduced watering in winter. It prefers warm conditions and should not be exposed to temperatures below 6-8°C. Propagation can be achieved from seeds or branch cuttings.
