About
This shrub or small tree can reach up to 5 metres in height, featuring greyish-brown bark. It produces small, white, star-shaped flowers with five petals, which develop into small, round, black seeds. Native to dry, rocky habitats across parts of the Arabian Peninsula, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central Somalia, and Kenya, it is known for its traditional medicinal uses, including remedies for fever, headache, and stomachache.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for dry, rocky habitats typical of the Kilifi coast. It can be used effectively as an ornamental specimen, for hedging, or in restoration efforts within dry shrubland landscapes.
Growing notes
A slow-growing, evergreen shrub, it requires minimal water once established due to its excellent drought tolerance. It is hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -5°C, and best propagated from seeds or cuttings.
