About
A small tree, typically growing 4-6 metres tall, with a central trunk up to 1.5 metres high and 10-15 centimetres wide. It is distinguished by its white bark, which often peels in layers, and produces gummy resins. Its flowers are small, white, and star-shaped with five petals.
Where it works in Kilifi
This drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and well-drained, alluvial or rocky soils, characteristic of its natural scrubland habitat in coastal Kenya. It is suitable as a specimen tree in a dry Kilifi garden or for restoration projects in suitable habitats.
Growing notes
This species grows vigorously but is highly sensitive to overwatering, which is a primary cause of failure. Once established, it requires a bright position and should be watered sparingly, especially during cooler, drier periods to prevent rot. Propagation is possible from seeds or cuttings.
