This variable species grows as a spiny shrub or small tree up to 5 metres tall, with bark that often peels in broad, dull yellow or grey transverse strips. Its glossy green leaves are simple, serrate, and typically 10-50mm long. The plant produces a pleasant-smelling resin that has traditional uses.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained, red sandy loam soils, making it suitable for coastal thickets and dry bushland gardens in Kilifi. It can serve as a resilient specimen tree or contribute to restoration efforts in arid landscapes.
