About

This small, deciduous tree or shrub is distinctive for its papery, peeling bark, often revealing a greenish or reddish underlayer. It produces an aromatic resin and has small, inconspicuous flowers followed by red, drupe-like fruits.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving in full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils, this species makes an excellent specimen tree for xeriscape or rock gardens. Its unique peeling bark provides year-round interest, making it suitable for prominent placement where its form can be appreciated.

Growing notes

A slow to moderately growing species, it is remarkably drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal supplemental water. It is very hardy in the Kilifi climate, flourishing with little care in appropriate conditions.
