About
This small tree has mouse-grey branches and reddish-brown, lightly pubescent branchlets. Its elliptic leaves are up to 8 cm long and 3.5 cm wide, featuring yellow flowers in solitary axillary spikes 5–10 cm long. The fruit is ovate, about 3 cm long by 2.5 cm wide, with a hoary body, scattered red scales, and firm, copper-brown wings.
Where it works in Kilifi
Indigenous to the Kilifi coast, this small tree thrives in the wet tropical biome at elevations below 150 metres. It is suitable for restoration projects or as a garden specimen in full sun, tolerating well-drained soils typical of the coastal area.
Growing notes
Once established, this hardy tree can tolerate dry conditions, preferring well-draining soil that dries out between waterings. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and promotes healthy growth.
