About
This semi-deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching 5-12 metres, is identifiable by its rough, greyish bark that flakes in strips. Its deep green to grey-green leaves are obovate, resembling mouse ears, and often turn coppery in autumn. Creamy white to yellowish, sweet-scented flowers emerge in spikes, followed by striking 4-winged, reddish-brown fruits around 20mm in diameter, which persist on the plant.

Ideal for sunny or semi-shaded areas in a Kilifi-coast garden, this plant thrives in sandy or loamy, well-draining soil. It can be used as a decorative shrub, a small specimen tree, or in xeriscaping, and is suitable for small gardens due to its non-aggressive root system.

With a moderate to slow growth rate, this bushwillow is drought-resistant once established but benefits from occasional watering during dry periods. It is hardy and can tolerate dry conditions and various soil types, requiring protection from frost when young.
