About
This much-branched, bushy, deciduous shrub typically grows up to 5 metres high, though some records suggest it can reach taller, tree-like proportions. Its opposite leaves are narrowly oblong-elliptic to obovate, up to 13 cm long, with a pubescent texture, especially on the underside, and feature silvery scales. Small, four-petalled, yellow-green to yellow flowers appear in short axillary spikes, developing into distinctive narrowly four-winged fruits that are 2-3 cm long.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. This scandent shrub can be utilised as a specimen plant, integrated into informal hedges, or included in restoration efforts for dry bushland environments.
Growing notes
Propagation can be achieved through seed or cuttings. While it prefers a warm, humid climate and should be kept moist during establishment, its natural habitat suggests it is likely tolerant of drier conditions once mature. Regular fertilisation with a balanced feed is recommended.
