About
Combretum constrictum is an evergreen, sarmentose semi-herbaceous shrub or woody climber native to coastal East Africa. It features striking globose racemes of bright red flowers with long stamens, blooming for extended periods. Its elliptic leaves are almost opposite, and the plant produces five-ribbed, ellipsoid fruits containing a single seed.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun and is adaptable to average, well-drained soils. Its climbing habit makes it suitable for training on structures or as a specimen, while its showy flowers attract pollinators, making it excellent for pollinator gardens.
Growing notes
Easy to cultivate, Powderpuff Combretum requires regular watering during establishment but becomes tolerant of short dry periods once rooted, preferring the soil to dry out between waterings. It is resistant to heat and humidity. Pruning during the growing season helps maintain its shape and promotes new growth.
