About
Cola porphyrantha is an evergreen tree typically reaching 7–20 metres in height, characterised by glabrous stems and elliptic to ovate leaves, measuring 8–25 cm long. It produces bright red or red-purple cauliflorous flowers, 12–16 mm across, which emerge directly from the trunk and branches in clusters. The fruits are ovoid-round and locally edible.
Where it works in Kilifi
This critically endangered tree thrives in moist, well-drained sandy or coral rag soils, benefiting from high humidity typical of Kilifi's coastal environment. It is suitable for restoration projects and as a striking specimen or shade tree in larger gardens.
Growing notes
For propagation, seeds require a warm, moist, and humid environment for germination. Once established, it prefers moist conditions and, as a tropical species, should be prioritised for conservation planting.
