About
The Coconut Palm is a large, single-trunked tree growing up to 30 metres tall, characterised by a graceful, feathery crown of long pinnate leaves. Its slim, ringed trunk is often curved and topped by a fountain of fronds. This iconic palm produces large, single-seeded fruits (coconuts) that range from green to yellow, enclosed in a fibrous husk and woody shell, providing both sustenance and various materials.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in full sun for at least 6-8 hours daily, this palm is ideal for Kilifi's humid, frost-free coastal lowlands and seashores. It prefers moderately fertile, well-draining sandy soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, showcasing excellent salt and wind tolerance. Plant as a striking specimen tree, for shade, or in groups, allowing ample space of about 10.5 metres for tall varieties or 3 metres diameter for clusters.
Growing notes
Growing at a medium rate, Coconut Palms require consistent moisture, particularly when young, though mature trees can tolerate brief dry spells. They are not drought-resistant and need regular watering during dry periods to maintain health and fruit production. Highly sensitive to frost, they thrive in warm, humid climates with temperatures consistently above 18°C. Exercise caution when siting, as falling coconuts can pose a hazard.
