About
This species is a woody climbing shrub or liana, capable of reaching up to 10 metres, and sometimes features blunt thorns on its stems to aid climbing. Its opposite leaves can grow up to 18 by 10 cm, often with one leaf in a pair larger than the other, and are elliptic-oblong to ovate in shape. Terminal heads of white, fragrant flowers appear, which are showy but short-lived, maturing into glossy dark green, four-lobed fruits, 10-12 mm long, encircled by a greenish or purple-red calyx.
Where it works in Kilifi
As a robust climber native to tropical African forests and riverine habitats, it is suitable for a Kilifi-coast garden in full sun to partial shade. It can serve as a specimen plant, a screen on a trellis, or for ecological restoration in forest edge or riverine areas, requiring support due to its climbing nature.
Growing notes
This plant is generally easy to cultivate, tolerating various soil types but preferring moist, well-drained conditions. Provide regular watering during growing and flowering periods, ensuring to avoid waterlogging. It is known to grow quickly and benefits from pruning to maintain its desired shape and vigour.
