About
Clausena anisata is a deciduous or semi-deciduous shrub or small tree, typically growing 3-5 metres tall but can reach up to 10 metres. Its compound leaves feature 11-37 leaflets, are dotted with pellucid glands, and release a distinctive, often strong aniseed or horse-like aroma when bruised. It produces small, fragrant cream to yellowish-white flowers, followed by edible, ovoid berries that ripen from red to purplish-black.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable species thrives in full sun to light shade on the Kilifi coast, preferring relatively moist areas like forest margins and coastal bush. It serves well as a specimen tree, for creating dense hedges, or in restoration plantings, providing cover for wildlife.

Horsewood is a fast-growing plant that, once established, is relatively low-maintenance, though it prefers consistent moisture. It has a non-aggressive root system. The leaves emit a strong odour when crushed, which some may find unpleasant.
