About
This annual scrambling or trailing vine is characterised by its densely woolly young stems, which become hairless with age, and its deeply lobed, hairy leaves. It produces large, spherical to oval, edible fruits, known as pepos, which have a hard rind and a juicy, sweet flesh that can range in colour from red to pink, yellow, orange, green, or white. The plant also bears unisexual male and female yellow or white flowers on the same plant.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in Kilifi's long, warm summers, Watermelon requires full sun and fertile, well-drained loamy soil with a neutral pH. Due to its sprawling nature, allow ample space, typically 2-3 metres between plants, for its vines to spread. It serves well as a productive garden specimen for edible fruit.
Growing notes
Watermelon grows rapidly, maturing from seed in 80-100 days or 60-90 days from transplanting. It needs consistent moisture, especially during germination and fruit development, but avoid overwatering to prevent fungal issues. This frost-tender annual requires warm soil temperatures (above 21°C) and undisturbed vines for optimal fruit development.
