About
This vigorous, evergreen climber is native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It features thick, glossy green leaves that are typically oval to sub-circular and succulent, with toothed margins. Small green flowers lead to subspherical red fruits, approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this heat-tolerant plant thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade, but can adapt to some direct sun. Plant in well-draining, loamy soil. It can be grown as a climbing specimen on a trellis or allowed to trail.
Growing notes
A fast-growing vine, it requires moderate watering; allow the topsoil to dry out between waterings, reducing frequency in winter. It prefers warm temperatures and is tolerant of dry air. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser, reducing or stopping in colder months.
