About
This deciduous to evergreen succulent climber features distinctive quadrangular, green stems that are constricted at the nodes, often appearing nearly leafless in maturity. Small, toothed, trilobe leaves emerge from the nodes on young shoots, alongside tendrils for climbing. It produces clusters of small greenish, yellowish, or white flowers that develop into round, red to black berries.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable liana flourishes in full sun to light shade and tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, including nutritionally poor ones. Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, it can be grown as a specimen climber, for dune stabilisation, or as a dense hedge. Allow ample space as it can spread vigorously.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, Veldt Grape is highly drought-tolerant once established and prefers infrequent, deep watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between sessions. It is frost-tender, thriving in warm tropical conditions, and is easily propagated from stem cuttings. Ensure good air circulation to deter pests.
