About
This herbaceous plant, native to Eastern Tropical Africa, forms a flat, knobby base up to 45 cm across, often with spongy, tuberous roots. Its leaves, up to 38 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, emerge from stems that can reach 60 cm tall. Small, white to greenish-white flowers, about 4 cm across, appear on stalks throughout the year, attracting ants.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this plant thrives in partial shade with well-draining soil. It suits areas receiving 4-5 hours of direct sunlight, such as under larger trees or in a rockery, and is well-suited to coral cliff environments.
Growing notes
This plant is relatively easy to grow, preferring consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged; do not let the soil dry out for extended periods to prevent leaf loss. It is not cold-hardy, requiring temperatures above 4.4°C, and can be propagated from seeds or cuttings.
