About
This large, evergreen or deciduous tree can reach up to 45 metres, often featuring prominent buttresses and smooth, pale brown bark that flakes in small discs. Its glossy green, oblong leaves are typically 5-17 cm long with an asymmetrical base. Small, greenish flowers develop into fleshy, red, ovoid fruits, approximately 7-12 mm long, which are conspicuously 4-ribbed when dry.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for larger Kilifi-coast gardens or parklands, this tree thrives in areas with partial shade, particularly when young, to keep its roots cool. It is an excellent choice as a shade tree or an ornamental specimen, and can be planted in restoration areas within lowland rainforest habitats. Ensure adequate spacing to accommodate its mature size.
Growing notes
This is a fast-growing species, with young trees typically growing 1-2 metres per year. While established trees tolerate a range of conditions, seedlings perform best in partial shade and require protection from full sun to prevent root overheating. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance in terms of water, thriving in forest conditions.
