About

This is a magnificent, fast-growing deciduous tree, notable for its straight trunk often adorned with conical spines and developing impressive buttress roots with age. It produces large seed pods filled with a fluffy, cotton-like fibre (kapok) which was historically used for stuffing, and its flowers are a significant food source for bats and insects.

Where it works in Kilifi

A superb choice for large gardens, parks, or as a grand specimen tree, requiring full sun and thriving in well-drained soils. Due to its eventual immense size and wide-spreading canopy, ensure it has ample space to grow without obstruction.

Growing notes

It exhibits a fast growth rate and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, needing little supplemental water. Generally hardy in coastal Kilifi conditions, young plants benefit from regular watering until well-rooted.
