About

This robust shrub features stiff branches, often armed with sharp spines, providing excellent security. It produces fragrant, creamy-white flowers that mature into distinctive rounded, greenish-yellow fruits, which are edible though sometimes tart.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this adaptable shrub is excellent for mixed hedges or as a resilient specimen plant in coastal gardens. Its spiny nature makes it a good barrier plant, suitable for property boundaries or naturalising in restoration areas.

Growing notes

It exhibits a moderate growth rate and, once established, is remarkably drought-tolerant, requiring minimal supplemental watering. This hardy plant is well-suited to the local Kilifi climate and generally pest-free.
