About
This deciduous shrub or small tree typically grows 2-15 metres tall, forming a medium-round canopy. It produces fragrant yellow flowers arranged in racemes and distinctive long, cylindrical, blackish pods, 30-90 cm long, containing seeds embedded in pulp. The subspecies *kassneri* is characterised by its minutely puberulous branchlets, leaflets, and densely grey-puberulous pods.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape, thriving in full sun and well-draining loamy or clayey soils, often found on termite mounds in its natural habitat. Its deep rooting system makes it excellent for soil conservation and erosion control, as well as providing shade. Plant as a specimen tree or in a restoration area, allowing adequate space for its mature size.
Growing notes
This is a moderately fast-growing species that is drought tolerant once established. Over-watering can inhibit flower production. Young seedlings are vulnerable to fire, though mature trees are fire resistant; ensure proper protection for juvenile plants.
