About
Carissa spinarum is a much-branched, spiny evergreen shrub growing up to 6 metres tall, armed with rigid, simple thorns. It produces glossy green, leathery leaves and fragrant white flowers, followed by edible, ovoid berries that ripen to dark purplish-black. All parts of the plant exude a white, non-toxic, milky latex.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-draining loamy or sandy soils, suitable for Kilifi's coastal environment. Its thorny nature makes it excellent for impenetrable hedges or as a specimen plant, providing food for birds and humans alike.
Growing notes
Growth rate is slow when young, becoming more vigorous once established. It is highly drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during the growing season. The plant contains milky latex and unripe fruits are toxic, requiring caution.
