About
This dense, evergreen shrub or small tree features glossy, dark green leaves and stout, often Y-shaped spines. It produces fragrant white to pinkish-white, star-shaped flowers, followed by edible scarlet to crimson berries, which can be used to make jams and jellies. Native to southern and eastern Africa, it extends northwards into Kenya.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable shrub thrives in Kilifi's coastal gardens, tolerating full sun to semi-shade and sandy, well-drained soils. Its thorny nature makes it an excellent choice for impenetrable hedges, security barriers, or as an attractive specimen plant, spaced about a metre apart for hedging. It also tolerates strong, salt-laden coastal breezes and attracts local wildlife.
Growing notes
This fast-growing shrub is moderately drought-resistant once established, requiring moderate watering with periods of drying out between sessions. It is frost-tender and best suited for warmer coastal climates, with young plants needing protection from cold. While the ripe fruits are edible, the plant contains a milky sap and is generally considered toxic to pets and humans if ingested, so caution is advised.
