About
Capparis sepiaria var. stuhlmannii is a scrambling, prickly, evergreen shrub native to Somalia and Mozambique, thriving in dry shrubland. It features white or cream flowers, approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, which develop into spherical, fleshy, purple-black fruits 6-15 mm across. The leaves are typically broadly elliptic and can be sparsely hairy.
Where it works in Kilifi
This variety is well-suited for Kilifi's dry coastal conditions, requiring full sun and well-drained soil. Its scrambling habit makes it ideal for hedges, security barriers, or in restoration efforts for dryland areas.
Growing notes
Once established, this shrub is drought-tolerant and requires moderate watering. Light pruning can help manage its growth and encourage a denser form, but care should be taken due to its sharp, hooked thorns.
