About
Ylang-ylang is a fast-growing, evergreen tropical tree known for its intensely fragrant, drooping flowers that mature from green to yellowish-brown, featuring hairy, curled petals. The dark green, ovate-oblong leaves have wavy margins, and the tree produces distinctive aggregate fruits that turn from dark green to black when ripe. Native to Southeast Asia, its essential oil is highly valued in the perfume industry and aromatherapy for its rich, sweet scent.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining, fertile loamy soil rich in organic matter. It makes an excellent specimen or shade tree for coastal gardens in Kilifi, but requires protection from strong winds. Allow ample space as it can grow into a large tree.

Ylang-ylang is a fast-growing tree, capable of over 2 metres of growth per year in its early stages. It requires moderate to frequent watering, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist once established. All parts of the plant are considered toxic to cats and dogs, and the essential oil can cause skin irritation in some individuals. Regular pruning is beneficial to maintain shape and promote prolific flowering.
