About

This low-branching evergreen tree typically grows 8 to 20 metres tall with a broad, spreading crown. It features glossy, dark green elliptic leaves and small, fragrant white flowers that appear in racemes throughout the year. The tree produces round, green drupes that ripen to yellow or brownish-red, containing a single large seed.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for coastal gardens in Kilifi, thriving in full sun on sandy, well-drained soils. It serves well as a specimen tree, providing excellent shade, or as part of a windbreak and for dune stabilization. Allow ample space due to its spreading habit.

Growing notes

A slow-growing tree, it is remarkably hardy once established, tolerating wind, salt spray, and periods of drought. Requires moderate watering during dry spells, especially for the first two years after planting. All parts, particularly the seeds and sap, contain toxic substances, so caution is advised.
