About
This low-growing perennial forms a creeping rhizome and features medium green, smooth, heart-shaped to ovate leaves. Its inflorescence is characterised by a white spathe that encloses a yellow spadix, which is shorter than the spathe. Native to eastern Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania, it is typically found growing at the foot of trees in virgin forests.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for shaded, moist areas in a Kilifi garden, mimicking its native virgin forest understory habitat. It can function as a groundcover or underplanting beneath larger indigenous trees, preferably in rich, well-drained soil.
Growing notes
As an evergreen, it spreads by creeping rhizomes. Once established, it benefits from consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells, reflecting its natural forest environment. It should be protected from direct, harsh sun.
