About
This evergreen mangrove tree typically grows 7–20 metres tall, sometimes reaching up to 35 metres, and features grey or reddish-brown bark. It is distinguished by its distinctive knee roots, which emerge from the mud to aid in gas exchange. The large, elliptic leaves are dark green and leathery, complemented by solitary, axillary flowers with white or cream petals that turn brown. The species is viviparous, with spindle-shaped, olive green propagules (seedlings) that develop on the tree, drop into the mud, and establish rapidly.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal gardens or restoration in Kilifi, this species thrives in intertidal mud-flats, estuaries, and less exposed areas along the inner edge of mangroves or creeks. It can be used for soil stabilisation and coastal protection, preferring moist, well-draining brackish soil and high humidity.
Growing notes
A slow-growing and long-lived mangrove, it can take 40 years to achieve a 16 cm bole diameter, with growth rates typically less than 1 metre per year in height. It tolerates waterlogging, wind, shade, salt wind, and termites once established. Natural regeneration is usually successful from fallen propagules; however, propagation from cuttings is difficult.
