About
Bridelia micrantha is a medium to large deciduous tree, typically growing up to 20 metres tall, with grey-brown, flaky bark that can feature small blunt spines. Its glossy dark green leaves often turn vibrant orange in autumn, complemented by small yellow flowers and edible, sweet-tasting black berries. This fast-growing species is prized for its durable, termite-resistant hardwood and widespread traditional medicinal applications.
Where it works in Kilifi
Thriving in moist, well-drained loamy soils, it is ideal for coastal, riverine, or swamp forest restoration areas in full sun to partial shade. It serves well as a fast-growing shade tree, an impressive specimen, or can be pruned into a dense hedge, requiring at least 3 metres spacing from permanent structures due to its extensive root system.
Growing notes
This species exhibits a very fast growth rate, potentially reaching up to 2 metres annually, and prefers consistently moist soil, thriving with annual rainfall between 800-2500 mm. While it tolerates moderate frost, it is not drought-resistant and its aggressive root system necessitates careful placement away from foundations or paving.
